Frequently Asked Questions about Uva Ursi Extract
What is Uva Ursi (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) herb extract?
Uva Ursi is a low, trailing evergreen shrub of the heath family (Ericaceae), botanically Arctostaphylos uva-ursi. The name uva ursi means "bear's grape," and the plant is also widely called bearberry and, in North America, kinnikinnick. The part used here is the herb (the leaf). The leaf naturally contains a compound called arbutin. Our extract is offered in two forms - an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture - each from ethically sourced raw material. This is a whole-herb liquid extract that carries the plant's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Arctostaphylos uva-ursi herb; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. Both deliver the herb's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the same as the arbutin sold for skin, or other bearberries?
Two useful clarifications. First, arbutin: uva ursi is a natural source of arbutin, and you may notice that "arbutin" (often alpha-arbutin) is sold widely as a cosmetic skin-brightening ingredient in serums and creams. Our product is different - it is the whole-herb extract of the uva ursi plant taken by the drop, not a cosmetic arbutin product for the skin. Second, the plant: our species is Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the true bearberry; it is related to but distinct from other Arctostaphylos plants such as the manzanitas. We label our product clearly by botanical name (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) and plant part (herb) so there is no confusion with cosmetic arbutin or with the other species.
How do I use Uva Ursi liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Uva ursi is traditionally used only for short periods, so do not use it continuously - see the safety information below. Drink the entire contents.
Is Uva Ursi extract right for everyone? Important safety information.
Uva Ursi is not right for everyone, and it calls for real caution. The leaf naturally contains arbutin, which the body converts to a compound called hydroquinone, so uva ursi is intended for short-term use only - traditionally about one to two weeks at a time, and not repeatedly over the year. Do not use it during pregnancy or while nursing. Do not use it if you have kidney disease. It is not for children. Do not exceed the suggested serving, and do not use it for extended periods. Uva ursi may temporarily give urine a greenish-brown tint, which is harmless. If you take any medication or have a medical condition, talk with a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite is best refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
