Cuscuta is a leafless plant with branching stems that can reach up to 5 feet in height. It is a parasitic plant: cuscuta has no chlorophyll and cannot make its own food through photosynthesis. That’s why it grows on other plants and uses their nutrients for its own means. Cuscuta chinensis contains quercetin, astragalin, hyperin, quercetin-3-O-β-D-galactose-7-O-β-glucoside. *

Frequently Asked Questions about Tu Si Zi Extract
What is Tu Si Zi / Chinese Dodder Seed (Cuscuta chinensis) extract?
Tu Si Zi extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried seed of Cuscuta chinensis, a slender twining plant in the family Convolvulaceae known in English as Chinese dodder. In traditional Chinese herbalism the seed is called Tu Si Zi, and in pharmacopoeia texts it appears as Semen Cuscutae. Dodders are unusual plants: they are parasitic vines with almost no chlorophyll and no functioning roots of their own, so they twine around a host plant to obtain nutrients. Our extract is made from the seed and is offered in two forms: an alcohol-free glycerite and a traditional alcohol-based tincture, each prepared from ethically sourced raw material from Nepal. This is a whole-seed liquid extract that carries the seed's natural spectrum of constituents - it is not an isolated or standardized single compound. We label the product by botanical name and plant part so it is clear this is the seed of Cuscuta chinensis.
What is the difference between the alcohol-free and tincture versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Cuscuta chinensis seed; only the solvent differs. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal-clear water, which suits those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The tincture uses a traditional blend of vegetable glycerine, alcohol and water. Choose the alcohol-free glycerite if you prefer no alcohol; choose the tincture if you prefer a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life.
Is this the same as the dodder weed?
It is the same kind of plant botanically, but a completely different context. Dodder is best known to farmers and gardeners as a troublesome parasitic vine that twines over crops and ornamentals, and most information about dodder online is about identifying and controlling it. Our product is not about that: it is the dried seed of Cuscuta chinensis, prepared as a herbal supplement, which in Chinese herbal tradition is a long-established material called Tu Si Zi. It is also worth being precise about species: ours is Cuscuta chinensis; the pharmacopoeia also recognises Cuscuta australis for this herb, while the common field dodder in North America is Cuscuta campestris, a different species. Because dodder is a parasitic plant that draws its nutrients from a host, the identity and quality of the source material matter, which is why we specify the botanical name, the plant part, and the origin. We label every product this way so there is no confusion between the medicinal seed and the agricultural weed.
How do I use Tu Si Zi liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (about 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper bulb) in 2 oz of water or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents. The alcohol-free glycerite and the tincture are used the same way; choose the one that fits your preference.
Is Tu Si Zi extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
This product should not be used during pregnancy. Nursing mothers, and anyone taking prescription medication or managing a health condition, should consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, and it is wise to consult a practitioner trained in traditional Chinese herbs before combining it with other herbs. Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. As with any concentrated herbal extract, it is best not to exceed the suggested serving size. This is a product formulated for adults; it is not intended for children or for animals. Keep out of reach of children. This alcohol-free glycerite should be kept refrigerated after opening. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
