Dried mulberries are oblong, 1 to 2cm long, and 6 to 10mm in diameter. Base is with handle that is 1 to 1.5cm long. Surface is purple, black, or white in color. Ear are polymerized by 30 to 60 achenes, which are ovoid, slightly flat, 2 to 5mm long, and with 4 membranous bracts outside. Embryo is white, oily, and rich in sugar. It is with light odor and sweet and slightly sour in taste. In general, the preferred one is bigger in size, thick in flesh, black in color, and richer in sugar content. *

Suggested use and dosage for adults: Shake well before use. 20-30 drops (1 ml., one full squeeze of dropper), up to 4 times a day or as directed by your practitioner. The best way to use liquid herbal tinctures is to put the suggested amount in a glass of water, tea, or juice and drink the entire contents. Tinctures can also be administered directly into the mouth without the assistance of water however some tinctures are unpalatable which is why most people prefer to dilute them into a beverage.

What is Sang Shen, Mulberry Fruit (Morus alba)?
Sang Shen is the mulberry fruit - the berry of the white mulberry tree, Morus alba, a plant of the family Moraceae. In traditional Chinese herbalism the ripe fruit is called Sang Shen (or Sang Shen Zi). The mulberry is an edible berry, eaten fresh and dried around the world, and the part used here is the dried fruit. Our raw material is cultivated in China. The extract is offered in two forms, a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite. This is a whole-fruit liquid extract carrying the fruit's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single compound, and we label it clearly by botanical name and plant part. One thing worth knowing: the mulberry tree gives several herbs used separately - the fruit (Sang Shen), the leaf (Sang Ye), the twig (Sang Zhi) and the root bark (Sang Bai Pi) - and we carry each as its own product. What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Morus alba fruit; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, together with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, suited to those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the fruit's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Which mulberry is this, and what about the leaf, twig and Sang Ji Sheng?
This is the fruit of the white mulberry, Morus alba - the berry, known in traditional Chinese herbalism as Sang Shen. A few clarifications, because mulberry covers a lot. First, the species: ours is white mulberry, Morus alba; black mulberry (Morus nigra) and red mulberry (Morus rubra) are different species. Second, the parts: the mulberry tree yields several separate herbs, and we sell each on its own pages - the fruit (Sang Shen, this product), the leaf (Sang Ye), the twig (Sang Zhi) and the root bark (Sang Bai Pi). They are the same tree but different parts with different traditional uses, so it is worth checking you have the part you want. Third, a name that can mislead: Sang Ji Sheng is often listed as a mulberry, but it is not mulberry at all - it is Taxillus chinensis, a mistletoe that grows on mulberry and other trees, and we sell it separately. Our product here is specifically the mulberry fruit, Morus alba. We label the botanical name and plant part on every page so there is no confusion.
