Frequently Asked Questions about Niu Bang Zi Extract
What is Niu Bang Zi / burdock seed (Arctium lappa) extract?
Niu Bang Zi is a liquid extract of the dried seed of Arctium lappa, greater burdock, a plant of the Asteraceae (sunflower and daisy) family. In traditional Chinese herbalism the seed is called Niu Bang Zi, and in pharmacy it is known as Fructus Arctii; botanically the burdock "seed" is actually the small dry fruit of the plant, which is why you may also see it sold as "burdock fruit." This tincture is extracted with organic alcohol at 48% by volume. It is a whole-seed liquid extract carrying the seed's natural constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and it is meant to be taken internally by the drop. Please note this is the SEED, a different plant part from burdock root (the gobo vegetable) and burdock leaf, and please read the allergy and safety notes below.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same Arctium lappa seed; only the solvent differs. This tincture uses organic alcohol at 48% by volume with vegetable glycerin and water, the classic conventional method that yields a super-concentrated extract with a long shelf life. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and crystal clear water instead, for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. Choose the tincture for a traditional alcohol-extracted format; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol. The botanical inside is identical. Please follow the safety notes for both.
How is burdock SEED different from burdock root and leaf?
Burdock (Arctium lappa) is used in three different plant parts, and they are not interchangeable. This product is the SEED (Niu Bang Zi, also called burdock fruit or Fructus Arctii). Burdock ROOT is the long taproot eaten as the vegetable "gobo" and sold separately as a root extract; burdock LEAF is another separate part. They come from the same plant but are used differently in traditional practice, so we label ours clearly as the seed. If you specifically want the root (the food-style product) or the leaf, those are separate items. One naming note: because the burdock "seed" is botanically the fruit, you may see the same part called "burdock fruit" - it is the same thing.
How do I use Niu Bang Zi / burdock seed liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Use the number of drops and the frequency shown on the label, in a little water, tea or juice, or as directed by your practitioner. Because this is an alcohol tincture, adding it to a little water softens the taste. Do not exceed the suggested serving. Please read the safety and allergy information below before use. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct light.
Is Niu Bang Zi / burdock seed right for everyone? Safety information.
Burdock is a food plant - its root is eaten as the vegetable gobo - and the seed is generally well tolerated at sensible amounts, but there are a few important cautions. First, allergy: burdock belongs to the daisy/sunflower (Asteraceae) family, so if you are allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, daisies or related plants, you may react to it - use caution or avoid. Do NOT use during pregnancy, as burdock has traditionally been considered a uterine stimulant, and avoid while nursing. Burdock is traditionally a diuretic (it can increase urine flow), so use care if you take water pills (diuretics) or are prone to dehydration. It may also affect blood sugar, so consult your practitioner if you take diabetes medication. Keep to the suggested serving and do not exceed it. If you take any other medication or have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children. This tincture contains 48% alcohol by volume and should be stored in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
