Frequently Asked Questions about Mullein Extract
What is mullein flower extract used for?
Mullein flower extract is a dietary supplement made from the dried flowers of Verbascum thapsus, a tall biennial plant native to Europe and Asia and naturalized throughout North America. Mullein has one of the longest histories of use in European traditional herbal medicine, with records of use dating back over 2,000 years. The flower of Verbascum thapsus has been used traditionally to support respiratory health and soothe the throat and airways, distinct from the leaf which is the plant part most commonly used in modern commercial supplements. As a dietary supplement, mullein flower extract is used to support general wellness and healthy respiratory function. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
What is the difference between mullein flower drops and mullein flower tincture?
HawaiiPharm offers mullein flower in two liquid formats. The alcohol-free glycerite drops use vegetable glycerin and purified water as solvents, making them suitable for those who prefer to avoid alcohol. The mullein flower tincture uses grain alcohol as the primary solvent, which is the traditional method of herbal extraction. Both are made from the same dried Verbascum thapsus flower.
What is Verbascum thapsus?
Verbascum thapsus, commonly known as great mullein, common mullein, or woolly mullein, is a tall biennial plant in the family Scrophulariaceae. In its first year, the plant grows as a low rosette of large, soft, densely woolly leaves covered in silvery-grey hairs. In its second year, a single flowering stalk emerges that can reach 2 meters (6 feet) in height, topped with a dense spike of small yellow flowers that bloom progressively from the base upward. Native to Europe and Asia, Verbascum thapsus has naturalized across North America, Australia, and New Zealand. The large fuzzy leaves inspired the name mullein, derived from Old French "moleine" and Latin "mollis," meaning soft. The yellow flowers produced in the second year of growth are the plant part used in HawaiiPharm's mullein flower extract, harvested and dried from Verbascum thapsus.
How do I use mullein flower liquid extract?
The suggested use is 20-30 drops taken three times daily, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner. Add the drops to water, tea, or juice before consuming. Shake the bottle well before each use, as natural separation may occur. Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Do not exceed the suggested serving size unless directed by a healthcare professional.
Are there any precautions when taking mullein flower supplement?
Mullein flower extract is generally well-tolerated. Consult a healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing. Do not use if you have known allergies to plants in the Scrophulariaceae family. If you take any prescription medications, consult a healthcare provider before adding any herbal supplement to your routine. Do not exceed the recommended serving size. If you experience any adverse effects, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.
