Paullinia cupana, commonly known as guarana, is a climbing vine in the family Sapindaceae native to the Amazon basin, primarily the Maues region of northwestern Brazil and adjacent Venezuela, where it grows in humid tropical forest conditions. The plant is a vigorous woody climber with pinnately compound leaves, small greenish-white flowers borne in panicles, and distinctive fruit: the capsule splits open when ripe to reveal a black seed partially covered by a white aril, producing a striking visual resemblance to an eye, which features prominently in Guarani cultural traditions associated with the plant. The genus name Paullinia honors Simon Paulli (1603-1680), a Danish botanist and physician; the species name cupana derives from the indigenous Guarani name for the plant. The common name guarana derives from the Guarani-speaking Satere-Mawe people, who have cultivated Paullinia cupana and incorporated it into their traditional practices for centuries. The family Sapindaceae includes lychee (Litchi chinensis), longan (Dimocarpus longan), and soapberry (Sapindus mukorossi). European documentation of guarana dates to the 17th century, when naturalists and missionaries recorded its use among indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin.
