Frequently Asked Questions about Bladderwrack Extract
What is Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus)?
Bladderwrack is a brown seaweed, botanically named Fucus vesiculosus, that grows along the rocky shores of the North Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Its common name comes from the small, paired air bladders along its fronds - little pockets of gas that keep the seaweed floating upright in the water so it can reach sunlight. It is also known as rockweed and black tang. As a seaweed, it has no true root; instead it anchors to rocks with a structure called a holdfast, which is why our product is made from the whole plant (the entire thallus) rather than a root or leaf. Like other sea vegetables, bladderwrack naturally contains iodine and a range of sea minerals. Our extract is offered in two forms - a traditional alcohol-based tincture and an alcohol-free glycerite - each made from ethically sourced, wild-harvested raw material. This is a whole-plant liquid extract that carries the seaweed's natural spectrum of constituents, not an isolated or standardized single-compound product, and we label it clearly by botanical name and part used.
What is the difference between the tincture and alcohol-free versions?
Both are liquid extracts of the same wild-harvested Fucus vesiculosus; only the solvent differs. The tincture uses alcohol as the traditional solvent, with vegetable glycerin and water. The alcohol-free version is a glycerite made with vegetable glycerin and purified water, giving it a naturally mild taste that suits those who avoid alcohol. Both deliver the seaweed's constituents in a convenient liquid you take by the drop. Choose the tincture for a classic alcohol-extracted format with a longer shelf life; choose the glycerite if you prefer no alcohol.
Is bladderwrack the same as kelp or sea moss?
No - this is a common mix-up, because these are three different seaweeds. Bladderwrack is Fucus vesiculosus, a brown seaweed with distinctive air bladders. Kelp is a different group of large brown seaweeds, usually species of Laminaria or Ascophyllum, often sold generically as "sea kelp"; it is not the same plant as bladderwrack, even though the two are sometimes confused or blended together. Sea moss (also called Irish moss) is Chondrus crispus, a red seaweed, and is a separate product entirely - HawaiiPharm offers it on its own. Our product is specifically bladderwrack, Fucus vesiculosus. Note also that "bladderwrack root" is a misnomer you may see online: as a seaweed, bladderwrack has no root, so our extract is made from the whole plant. We label our product clearly by botanical name and part used so there is no confusion with kelp or sea moss.
How do I use Bladderwrack liquid extract?
Shake well before use. Adults take 20-30 drops (approximately 1 ml, one full squeeze of the dropper) in 2 oz of water, tea, or juice, up to 4 times daily, or as directed by your practitioner. Drink the entire contents.
Is Bladderwrack extract right for everyone? Safety and storage.
Bladderwrack is a seaweed that is naturally high in iodine, so it is not right for everyone. If you have a thyroid condition, or take thyroid medication or blood-thinning medication, do not use it without first talking to a qualified healthcare practitioner, as the iodine content may not be appropriate for you. Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing without medical advice. As with any wild-harvested sea vegetable, quality sourcing matters, since seaweed can take up minerals from seawater. If you take any other medication or have a medical condition, consult your practitioner before use. Keep out of reach of children, and do not exceed the suggested serving. Store this tincture in a cool, dark place. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
