Ashwagandha Drops - Alcohol-Free Liquid Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) Root
This is an alcohol-free liquid extract (glycerite) of dried ashwagandha root - Withania somnifera, the winter cherry of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), a cultivated root crop of India.
- Botanical name: Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (Solanaceae)
- Plant part: Dried root
- Also known as: Ashwagandha, Winter Cherry, Indian Ginseng (a nickname only - it is not a Panax ginseng)
- Extract type: Alcohol-free glycerite - liquid drops
- Other ingredients: Vegetable glycerin, purified water
- Origin: Cultivated root, responsibly sourced. Gluten free. Made in the USA.
- Sizes: 2 oz, 4 oz, 32 oz, 64 oz, 256 oz and multi-packs
Why choose the alcohol-free drops
- No alcohol at all. The root is extracted in vegetable glycerin and purified water, so there is no ethanol in the bottle. This is the version people choose when they avoid alcohol for personal, religious, or dietary reasons, or simply do not want to taste it.
- Mild, naturally sweet taste. Glycerin softens the earthy, slightly bitter flavor of the root, so the drops go easily into water or juice.
- Same root as our tincture. The plant material and the plant part are identical; only the extraction liquid differs.
How to use the drops
Shake well before use. Put the number of drops shown on the label into a little water, juice, or tea and drink it, up to the frequency shown on the label. Glycerites keep best in the refrigerator after opening; use within the period printed on the label and keep the dropper clean.
What is a glycerite?
A glycerite is a liquid herbal extract made with vegetable glycerin instead of alcohol. Vegetable glycerin is a clear, thick, naturally sweet liquid obtained from plant oils; it dissolves and preserves the water-soluble parts of the root and gives the drops their smooth, sweet taste. Because glycerin is a weaker preservative than alcohol, a glycerite has a shorter shelf life once opened, which is why we recommend refrigeration. The percentage of glycerin and water is printed on the label.
Drops or tincture?
If you want a no-alcohol option with a gentle taste, choose these drops. If you prefer the classic alcohol-based herbal extract with the longest shelf life at room temperature, see our Ashwagandha Tincture - alcohol-based Withania somnifera root extract. Both are made from the same dried root.
What this product is not
It is a whole-root liquid extract. It is not a standardized powder such as KSM-66 or Sensoril, and not a capsule; the withanolide content is not standardized. Despite the nickname "Indian ginseng", ashwagandha is not related to Panax ginseng - the name comes from its traditional reputation, not from botany.
Important safety information - please read before use
Ashwagandha has several important cautions. Please read before use.
- Liver: rare cases of liver injury have been reported with ashwagandha products, usually within the first weeks to months of use. Stop and seek medical advice if you notice dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusual tiredness, or abdominal pain. Do not use if you have liver disease.
- Thyroid and hormones: ashwagandha can change thyroid hormone levels. Do not use if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication unless your doctor agrees.
- Pregnancy / nursing: do not use during pregnancy - the root has a traditional history of use to end pregnancy. Avoid while breastfeeding.
- Medication: it may add to the effect of sedatives and sleep medicines, blood-sugar-lowering and blood-pressure medicines, and immunosuppressants. Consult your practitioner if you take any of these. Stop use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery.
- Autoimmune conditions: avoid unless supervised by your doctor.
- Tolerance: larger amounts may cause stomach upset, loose stools, or drowsiness. Keep to the label serving and take breaks rather than using it continuously. It is a nightshade (Solanaceae) plant - avoid if you are sensitive to nightshades.
- If you have a medical condition, consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Do not give it to children without medical advice. Do not use it to self-treat any medical condition - see a qualified doctor instead. Keep out of reach of children.
