Viruses that enter the body directly attack human cells. As a rule, it is a single DNA molecule, and sometimes a simpler RNA molecule containing genetic information. In addition, the virus also contains a shell of proteins. However, some types of viruses (viroids) may not have it either. Viruses are able to integrate into the genetic apparatus of cells and reconfigure it to release their own copies. Viruses cannot multiply without the help of cells from other organisms.

Echinacea is a native American plant that was recognized over a century ago as a natural infection fighter. It is an immunostimulant, a substance that boosts the body’s immune system. Unlike traditional antibiotics that kill bacteria directly, echinacea works indirectly, killing the germ by strengthening your immune system. There is some evidence that it stimulates the body to produce more infection-fighting white blood cells, such as T-lymphocytes and killer white blood cells. It may also stimulate the release of interferons, one of the body’s most potent infection-fighting weapons. Interferon kills germs and also infiltrates their genetic control center, preventing them from reproducing. Besides helping the body produce more infection- fighting cells, echinacea helps these cells to produce more germ-eating cells, called macrophages, and it helps these cells eat the germs more voraciously, a process called phagocytosis. Echinacea also prevents bacteria from secreting an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which enables them to break through protective membranes, such as the lining of the intestines and respiratory tract, and invade tissues.
Elderberries, which are a very powerful antioxidant, have been used for centuries in folk medicine to treat colds. A 2001 study published in the U.S. National Library of Medicine stated that elderberry extracts are "natural remedies with antiviral properties." Another 2004 study published in the NLM commented on reduced duration of flu symptoms when using elderberry: "Symptoms were relieved on average four days earlier and use of rescue medication was significantly less in those receiving elderberry extract compared with placebo." University of Maryland Medial Center writes "Elderberry may have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxydant properties." In a double-blind clinical trial, more than 90 percent of the 15 patients taking elderberry extract (60 ml a day for adults and 30 ml a day for children) showed a significant reduction in symptoms after two days and complete recovery after three days.
Olive trees (Olea europea) grow wild around the Mediterranean and were probably first cultivated in Crete around 3500 BC. Olive oil is a staple part of the Mediterranean diet, but it seems the health-promoting properties of the olive tree are not restricted to the well-known benefits of its oil for cardiovascular health. The leaves contain a bitter substance called oleuropein, one component of which, elenoic acid, has been identified as a potent inhibitor of a wide range of viruses in laboratory tests. The calcium salt of elenoic acid destroyed all of the viruses it was tested against. Calcium elenolate also appears to act on the retrovirus for murine leukaemia by blocking its reverse transcriptase enzymes. These enzymes allow the virus to replicate by altering the DNA and RNA of healthy cells. Studies on infected hamsters have shown that calcium elenolate reduces the level of myxovirus parainfluenza type 3 and prevents its spread to the lungs. An uncontrolled clinical trial in Budapest involving over 500 patients concluded that olive leaf extract was extremely effective. Full and rapid recovery after taking the extract was noted in 115 out of 119 patients with respiratory tract infections and 120 out of 172 patients with viral skin infec-tions.
Lemon Balm has traditionally been employed against different disorders. Research has shown that the plant contains polyphenols, it can help significantly in the treatment of cold sores as well as other viral afflictions. Studies have shown a significant reduction in the duration and severity of herpes. Researchers also noted a "tremendous reduction" in the frequency of recurrence. Placebo-controlled trials have shown symptomatic improvement after application of a standardized lemon balm cream applied 2 to 4 times daily for 5 to 10 days. In another study on 115 patients, a proprietary preparation of lemon balm extract in a lip balm showed efficacy in treating lip sores. And preliminary studies show that lemon balm exhibited a high, concentration-dependent activity.
Cat's Claw is used mainly to boost the immune system to fight infections. Cat's Claw is also useful for various fungal problems, including Candida. Cat's Claw's anti-viral qualities have been used for treating autoimmune or inflammatory issues. Compounds found in Cat's Claw may work to kill viruses, bacteria, and other microorganisms that cause disease, and they work to inhibit healthy cells from becoming wrong cells. The oxindole alkaloids found in the bark and roots of Cat's Claw, have been documented to stimulate the immune system. It is these seven different alkaloids that are credited with having a variety of different medicinal and healing properties. Pau d'Arco has long been used in folk medicine to treat a wide range of illnesses. The inner bark contains a high proportion of chemicals called quinoids. One of the most studied of these compounds is lapachol, which has been found in laboratory tests to be active against various viruses. The mechanism of action of pau d’arco, like that of olive leaf and green tea, is thought to be through inhibition of DNA and RNA polymerase and retrovirus reverse transcriptase. The ability of Pau d’Arco to boost immune function is widely accepted and it has been used to treat a broad range of illnesses for generations. Pau d’Arco is considered to be one of nature’s most powerful antibiotics. A Munich researcher by the name of Bernhard Kreher based his entire doctoral paper on the protective effects to the immune system triggered by regularly taking Pau d'Arco. He found that the body's defense mechanism increased its activity level by nearly 50 percent when Pau d'Arco was ingested on a regular basis. Pau d’Arco contains a rich and potent source of anti-oxidants – known to protect the body by mopping up ‘free-radicals’ which cause harm to body cells. Anti-oxidants are also considered to slow the aging process by slowing down oxidation damage to DNA.
