California Poppy (Eschscholzia Californica) is a perennial or annual plant with an erect or branched stem, 5–60 cm high, smooth, sometimes bluish-colored. Basal and stem leaves are segmented, with rounded or acuminate lobes. Flowers are single with petals from yellow to orange, usually with an orange spot at the base, 20-60 mm. It blooms from February to September. The fruit is a capsule 3–9 cm, the seeds are small from brown to black, 1.5–1.8 mm, cancellated. The therapeutic properties of California Poppy are due to the content of alkaloids in its chemical composition. It has a sedative, antispasmodic, and even analgesic effect on the human body. This plant can normalize sleep, get rid of insomnia. The mild antispasmodic and sedative effect of alkaloids allows you to use it for the treatment of psychological and physical problems, urinary incontinence and nervous disorders in children.
Valerian, or Valeriana officinalis, belongs to the family Valerianaceae. It is known as a perennial plant that grows in Europe, North America and Asia although its motherland is known to be England. You can recognize this plant by dark leaves and white or pink flowers. Its name comes from the Latin verb valere (it means to be healthy and strong). The rhizome and roots of valerian contain up to 2 -3.5% of essential oil of yellow or light brown color, with a characteristic valerian smell. The main part of the oil is free valeric and valerenic acid, valepotriates, triterpene glycosides, tannins, organic acids, free amines. Valerian has a calming effect on the central nervous system, improves the activity of the cardiovascular system, reduces blood pressure, has an antispasmodic and weak choleretic effect, increases the secretion of the glands of the gastrointestinal tract.
Passionflower (Passiflora Incarnata) is a herb liana with a climbing stem up to 9 m long. Leaves are alternate with a finely stalked edge, up to 20 cm in diameter, sit on long petioles. Flowers are large, single, up to 7-9 cm in diameter, sitting on long peduncles, with five sepals. The fruit is a greenish-yellow berry, falling when ripe. Herbaceous parts of the plant are used in modern medicine (most often liquid extract), which have a sedative effect on the central nervous system with neurasthenia, insomnia, chronic alcoholism, and climacteric disorders. The plant contains 0.5% harman, harmine and harmola, which are indole alkaloids. It also contains flavonoids (vitexin, quercetin, apigenin, luteolin), coumarins and quinones. Passion flower is cultivated in the countries of Southeast Asia and the Philippines. It originates from North America. The species range covers the east and south-east of the United States from the states of Texas and Florida in the south to Kansas, Illinois and Maryland in the north.
Peppermint is a perennial herbaceous plant, with a horizontal branched rhizome and thin, fibrous roots. Stem is upright, 30-100 cm high, hollow, straight, branched, leafy. Leaves are opposite, oblong-ovate. The flowers are small, bisexual, light purple in color. Fruit is a cenobium, consists of four nuts. Fruits are rarely formed. In medicine, mint leaves are part of gastric, carminative, soothing and choleretic teas, mint drops from nausea as a means of increasing appetite, and antispasmodic stomachic remedy. The plants contain essential oil, tanning and resinous substances, carotene, hesperidin, ascorbic, chlorogenic, coffee, ursolic and oleanolic acids, rutin, betaine, arginine, neutral saponins, glucose, rhamnose, phytosterol. There is fatty oil in the seeds. Leaf oil also contains menthol esters of acetic and valeric acids, α- and β-pinene, limonene, dipentene, phellandrene, cyneol, citral, geraniol, carvone, dihydrocarvone.
Hops (Humulus Lupulus) is a perennial liana. Stem, twisting clockwise, is tetrahedral, hollow inside, covered with sharp spikes, up to 7 m long. Rhizome is long and creeping. Basal leaves are palate-like, three-five-lobed, deeply heart-shaped, with ovate, acuminate lobes; the upper leaves are entire. Hop contains essential oil, hop resins, wax, gum, bitter substances, valeric, n-aminobenzoic and hop acids, glycoside lupulin, carotene, ascorbic acid, choline, thiamine, nicotinic acid, yellow dye, tannins, flavonoids. The stem with fruit stalks are harvested in July - August, when they have a yellowish-green color. Then they are dried in the shade or in well ventilated areas. It has a sedative effect, it is recommended for cardiovascular neurosis, insomnia, neurasthenia.
