"Happiness: a good bank account, a good cook, and a good digestion".

Jean Jacque Rousseau

A medical term “Irritable Bowel Syndrome” refers to the gastrointestinal disorder that has such symptoms as diarrhea or constipation, recurring abdominal pain, gas, bloating, vomiting, nausea, loss of appetite, stomach fullness. This condition has no direct reason, but there are some factors that might provoke it. These factors include different infections, disbalance of bacteria in the intestines, inflammations, stress, anxiety. It’s interesting that women tend to suffer from IBS more often than men. Despite the fact there are a lot of pharmaceutical drugs for IBS, scientists claim that there is no cure for this disorder. People suffering from IBS are often advised to follow a special diet and stick to herbal treatment. There are many healing herbs that have proven to be effective in fighting Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Their action is milder than pharmaceuticals and they tend to have fewer side effects.

Herbs for Treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Chamomile

Chamomile has been traditionally used to treat the symptoms of IBS as it has the ability to relieve inflammation and soothe intestinal spasms. Chamomile tea can help fight gas, abdominal pain and intestinal irritation. In addition to that, chamomile is very helpful in fighting stress and relaxing the nervous system.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a very beneficial herb for the digestive system. It relieves stress and relaxes the intestinal muscles. It’s a well-known fact that IBS symptoms often occur as a result of emotional stress and tension. Lemon balm calms down both the nervous system and the body thus alleviating the unpleasant symptoms of IBS.

Wild Yam

Wild yam is considered a very effective remedy for irritable bowel syndrome as it has a strong ability to fight intestinal cramps.

It should be noted that the tea prepared from wild yam dried root has a very unpleasant flavor, but it can be mixed with some other herbs (for example, ginger root can make it more palatable).

Ginger

Ginger has been used as a remedy for digestive issues since ancient times. It’s an excellent cure for Irritable Bowel Syndrome as it fights intestinal cramps, eliminates nausea, improves the intestinal muscles tone.

Licorice

Licorice is also one of the best herbs for treating IBS as it has a great anti-inflammatory power and soothes the irritated intestinal membranes. It promotes the secretion of the protective mucous coating of the digestive system. Moreover, it stimulates the circulation within the gastrointestinal tract.

Fennel

Fennel has been traditionally used as a treatment for bloating, gas and intestinal spasms. It fights constipation and promotes intestinal health.

Slippery Elm

Slippery elm is widely used for indigestion. However, it has a laxative property so it may not be a good choice for people suffering from IBS with frequent or severe diarrhea. Slippery elm is a good option for Irritable Bowel Syndrome without diarrhea. It decreases flatulence, bloating and abdominal pain.
