In 2022 spice exports from India amounted to USD $3.93 billion. Spices are one of the main wealth of this country and 76 percent of all spices in the world are produced in India. At the same time, the inhabitants of this country in East Asia are also the main consumers of spices. The most exported spices from India are coriander, pepper, cardamom, ginger, fenugreek, celery, fennel, cumin, spice oils and of course turmeric and curry powder. 

Turmeric is considered to be one of the most popular oriental spices; turmeric has traveled a long way from India before its final destination in the kitchens of millions of people around the world. The popularity of Indian Turmeric has expanded throughout Southeast Asia, it has also reached China and ancient Egypt. 

What is Turmeric?

Asia turmeric belongs to the ginger family, it is Native to South and Southeast Asia, and can grow up to one meter. The spice is extracted from the roots of the plant, but rarely from the leaves.

Curcumin in the plant composition gives it a rich yellow color, making it a distinctive feature of the turmeric powder.

Hindus have been making the world-famous curry as far back as 500 BC.

The spice became popular in various countries, and it is now used in cooking, cosmetology and medicine around the world. Turmeric is valued for its bright bitter taste, persistent aroma, distinctive color it gives to dishes, and for the healing properties of its active compounds - curcuminoids.

Only four types of turmeric are used in cooking, despite there being more than 40 varieties of plant in the world.

Wild turmeric (Curcuma Aromatica) is called the queen of spices.

Turmeric (Curcuma Longa) is popular in oriental cuisine.

Curcuma Leucorrhiza is processed to produce starch.

White turmeric (Curcuma Zedoaria) has a burning bitter taste. This type is used to make liqueurs.

Studies have shown that curcumin has neuroprotective, antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Chemical composition of turmeric

The composition of turmeric is complex and diverse: the composition of essential oils is approximately 2.44%, the spice also contains fatty acids, curcuminoids (demethoxycurcumin, curcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin), sugars (glucose, arabinose), polypeptides, resins, and vitamins C, K, B6, iron, phosphorus, valleys, calcium and iodine.

Forms of Turmeric

There are three forms of turmeric that are used in cosmetology, cooking and other areas:

  1. Turmeric Powder
  2. Dried Turmeric Root
  3. Fresh Turmeric

There are several types of Indian turmeric, but the most commonly used are Madras and Alleppey. By the way, many spices have prefixes derived from geographic regions of growth or active trade.

Generally speaking, every type of turmeric has similar benefits, but at the same time can be used differently in cooking, medicine, and cosmetology.

Turmeric benefits

Turmeric plays an important role in suppressing the growth of certain tumor cells, the B vitamins in its composition provide a positive effect on the central nervous system, and vitamin K contributes to the normalization of blood clotting. Iodine is necessary for the normal functioning of the thyroid gland; iron is involved in hematopoiesis and is responsible for saturating cells with oxygen.

On the whole, turmeric can improve the general body condition, add strength and energy, normalize well-being and increase vitality.
