COMMON NAME: Yerba Mate
LATIN NAME: Ilex Paraguariensis
ORIGIN: South America
HABITAT: The habitat of Ilex Paraguariensis is Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. In its wild form, it grows in the Mediterranean, Europe, Asia Minor, North America, along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. It occurs in deciduous and coniferous forests, in penumbra or well-lit areas. Prefers high soil moisture.
The plant is cultivated in Latin America and the tropics of Asia. Especially famous for the large plantations is the province of Misiones in Brazil. The territory of Mate occupies more than 65 thousand hectares here. There were attempts to grow plants in other regions of the world, but climatic conditions for optimal growth and development of Mate were not very beneficial.
For optimal growth and development of Ilex Paraguariensis, tropical and subtropical climate conditions are ideal, where air humidity should be 1,500 mm per year when precipitation occurs.
BOTANICAL INFORMATION:
In the modern classification, Ilex Paraguariensis is classified as Angiosperms, the class Dicotyledons, the family Aquifoliaceae.
Ilex Paraguariensis is an evergreen shrub, or a tree with smooth whitish bark and fairly hard wood. The branches of the plant are sprawling, forming a crown of a pyramidal shape. The plant grows very slowly, up to 50-100 years. Some trees reach a height of 100 meters, but usually they grow only up to 15 meters. Cultural specimens are cut to form neat bushes up to 1.5 meters high. Leathery, glossy obovate leaves are placed on the shoots.
From late May to mid-June, the plant goes into the flowering stage. The flowers are axillar, dioecious, on short pedicels, located in bunches at the base of the leaves. Petals of corollas are of a greenish-white color. After flowering, approximately in September, appear drupe fruits of bright red color, spherical in shape, which are kept on branches throughout the winter. Yerba Mate propagates by seeds and cuttings.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION:
According to the results of repeated chemical studies of the plant, it turned out that Ilex Paraguariensis is a unique source of important components that are vital for life. Resins, vitamins C, A, B1, B2, B6, E, choline, riboflavin, pantothenic, ursolic, nicotinic acid, cholene, chlorophyll, inositol, magnesium, iron, potassium, manganese, tannins, glycosides, syringin, inbortin, calcium , sodium, silicon, potassium, cellulose, hydrochloric acid, phosphates - and this is not a complete list of the active substances of Yerba Mate. Such a set of substances is extremely rare in one plant and is considered to have a unique composition.
Strong Mate infusion is distinguished by a light sweetish aftertaste. This is because of the presence of theobromine, caffeine, and theophylline.
HISTORY:
The name "Mate" comes from the Indian word mati. The Guarani Indians called a vessel ("Calabas") which they made from an ordinary pumpkin. The vegetable was used for tea drinking, as well as for the preparation of the drink itself. Locals call Mate "kaa", in Europe the name Paraguayan tea is better known. In the world, Mate is a popular drink known as the "green gold" of South America.
The ritual of drinking Mate tea can take about two hours. Mate is a traditional drink that is usually served during business conversations, at diplomatic receptions, as well as at home or at a party. Refusing tea offered at a party is considered to be an insult to the owner of the house.
Bitter Mate is drunk only in the morning, when sweet is drunk already in the afternoon and evening. Bitter tea without sugar and other additives is an exclusively male drink when women and children drink a sweetened version.
