CHINESE NAME: Mu Jing Zi

ORIGIN: Southern Europe, Western Asia

HABITAT: Vitex Agnus-Castus grows throughout Southern Europe, North Africa and Asia. It can be found in Iran, India, Indonesia, China, Afghanistan, Turkey, Israel, Cyprus and Sri Lanka. The plant can grow on loamy, sandy and stony soils, salt-tolerant.

BOTANICAL INFORMATION: Vitex (Vítex agnus-castus) also known as Chasteberry is one of the species of tree-shrubs belonging to the genus Vitex. In total, the genus includes more than 215 different species, previously it was included in the Verbenaceae family, but according to the modern classification it is referred to Lamiaceae family.

Vitex can reach a height of eight meters. The stems of the plant are long, smooth, upright and tetrahedral. The fracture of which emit a sharp, spicy flavor. They have dense, soft and silky, pressed pubescence. This plant has complex, rounded, gray-green lanceolate leaves with palmate segmentation. Small, purple-lilac five-petal flowers are collected in spike panicles, reaching a length of twenty centimeters. Fruits are juicy drupes up to 5 mm in diameter. Each fruit is initially red; as it dries, it becomes black, gray-black, similar to black peppercorn.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION: All parts of Vitex contain flavonoids ( kaempferol, kastitsin, kvertsatagitin), alkaloids, vitamins and trace elements, tannins, essential oils, which include linolen, cineole, sabinen, pinene and organic acids (valerian, propionic, palmitic, kapron , acetic and formic).

HISTORY:

Vitex is known in many countries for its excellent culinary qualities as a spicy plant. Its fruits are widely used as a seasoning for meat, fish dishes, smoked meats, for preservation. Honey collected on Vitex flowers is also very tasty and valuable due to its healing qualities.

The plant was named Abraham tree in honor of the famous biblical prophet Abraham. The part of the Latin name for Vitex - Agnus-Castus, means “innocent lamb”.

The leaves were put in shoes. They relieved the feeling of tiredness in the legs.
