HABITAT: It is found in eastern and central America and some parts of Canada. It grows in open, sunny places along the roads.
BOTANICAL INFORMATION: Lobelia inflate is North American species of the genus Lobelia (lat. Lobelia) of the subfamily Lobelie (lat. Lobelioideae) of the Bellflower family (lat. Campanulaceae). The largest number of Lobelies (1200 species) grows in America (about 800 species), as well as in Africa, Australia, Asia and New Zealand. Lobelia is an annual herbaceous plant 40–90 cm tall, with a fine-leafed root system. The stem is upright, slightly branched, slightly pubescent, tetrahedral and contains milky sap.Leaves are alternate, 3-10 cm long, elongate-ovate, thin, bare, dark green above, with depressed veins, and lighter with protruding veins from below; lower are petiolate, middle and upper are sessile.The flowers are bisexual, small (5-6 mm long) light blue or bluish-purple in color. 5 stamens with purple anthers are fused into a tube. The fruit of the herb is bilocular, swollen box, 7–10 mm long, with a remaining cup. Seeds are numerous, oblong, yellowish-brown in color. It blooms from June to August, bears fruit in August.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION: All parts of Lobelia are rich in alkaloids. There are about 20 of them, among the most popular are lobelin, lobelanidin, lobininin, lobelanin, lelobanidin, lobinanidin. The plant is also rich in micro and macro elements, such as iron, copper, barium, strontium, lithium, silver, selenium, zinc and cobalt.
HISTORY:
Wild Lobelia is found in North America. At home, Lobelia herb was used by Indians as tobacco. One of its national names - Indian tobacco is connected with it.
The generic name comes from the name of Lobel - the Dutch botanist (1538), the doctor of the English king Jacob I.
